Creating a Product

How to use Kit to create a digital product to sell directly, plus FAQs about product creation.

Create digital products to sell via Kit

With Kit, you can sell products that have a:

  • One-time fee, including digital downloads and courses, or a

  • Recurring subscription fee, like a paid newsletter.

Here's how to set up a product.

1. Create a new product

Go to Products under the Earn tab in the navigation, and then click Create a product in the middle of the screen.

If you've already created at least one product, click the + New product button at the top right of the page instead.

NOTE: If your new product is similar to an existing one, you can duplicate the existing product instead of creating the new one from scratch. Then, edit the duplicated product as per step 6 of this guide onward.

To duplicate a product, click the three horizontal dots to the right of the product's name on the Products page > Duplicate.

2. Fill out your product's details

Next, fill out several details about your product. You'll be able to change some of these (e.g., your product's name and price) later.

First, give your product a name. After that comes the product type selection, where you can select whether you're selling a:

  • Product: Where the customer pays a one-time fee to get access to your product forever; or a

  • Subscription: Where the customer pays a recurring charge for the product and will have access to it until they cancel their payment.

Click Next when you're done.

3. Set up your product's price

Now, you'll set your product's price. This includes its:

  • Pricing Method: Where customers can pay a standard fixed one-time fee, any one-time amount they want on a "Pay what you want" basis, or multiple fixed payments under a payment plan.

    • More pricing settings will appear based on the pricing method you choose. For example, if you choose the standard pricing method, you'll enter a fixed price and select whether customers can buy multiple quantities of the product.

  • Product Type and Tax Code: These fields will appear if you've enabled VAT collection. Learn how to enable VAT collection and how to configure the Product Type and Tax Code fields in our guide to collecting VAT for product purchases.

  • Currency

Click Next to move to the next step.

4. Choose your product fulfillment method

Select whether you're selling a digital download, a newsletter, or something else. You can also redirect the customer to a certain URL for fulfilling delivery.

Send a file

If you're selling a digital download, upload the file for your product to the Product file section. We'll automatically deliver this file to your customers after they've made payment.

Go to URL

If you want to redirect customers to a certain URL for fulfilling their purchase, enter that URL into the Product URL field.

A newsletter or Something else

If you're selling a newsletter or something else, you'll be in charge of fulfilling delivery. For example, this could mean:

  • For a newsletter: Setting your newsletter customers as the recipients of your paid newsletter before sending it

  • For something else: Getting in touch with your customers to arrange their coaching sessions

Click Next again to proceed.

5. Set your product's URL

This will be your product's direct link.

If you have a custom domain set up in your account, you'll be able to select it from the Custom Domain dropdown. Alternatively, you can use your account's kit.com domain. (Unsure of the difference? Check out this article.)

NOTE: You can change your product's link later if you need to. In this case, the old link will automatically redirect to the new one. You won't be able to reuse the old link for future products (even if you've changed the original product's link to something else).

When you're done, click the Create product button.

6. Customize your product page

Now, you'll be led to the builder page for your new product, which will initially look something like this:

Most of our product page builder's functionality is similar to that of our Landing Page builder. Design how your product will be presented to potential buyers, including uploading an image, filling out your sales copy, and adding a custom call to action.

Save your changes anytime by clicking the Save button at the top right of the builder.

7. Configure your product's checkout page

First, click Checkout at the top left of the builder:

You'll see a preview of what the checkout page will look like for your customers.

We'll provide the necessities, like the payment fields. But other than that, you can adjust the look and feel of this step to your liking.

8. Configure your product's confirmation page

First, click Confirmation at the top left of the builder:

Then you'll be shown a preview of how the confirmation page will look, which is where someone will be taken after purchasing your product:

The amount paid, order date, and payment method sections are not editable, but you can modify the content above and below them.

NOTE: If you had selected Send a file as your product fulfillment method in step 4, the confirmation page will also display a download link for your product.

9. Configure your product's receipt email

Now, click Receipt Email at the top left of the builder:

You'll see a preview of how the receipt email sent to your purchasers' inboxes for this product will look:

You can modify the copy above the amount paid, order date, and payment method sections. These sections—and everything below them—aren't editable.

NOTE: The Download button will be displayed only if you selected Send a file as your product fulfillment method in step 4.

9. Publish your product

When you're happy with all of the above, click the Publish button located near the top right of the product builder—and that's it.

FAQs

How do I embed my product into my website or share a direct link to it?

Click Publish from the top left of the builder (to the right of the Save button):

Edit Product - Kit - Google Chrome 2024-10-10 at 12.47.50 PM

If this is your first time publishing a draft product, click the Publish Product button in the window that pops up.

Either way, you can then grab the direct link to your product:

There are also options you can enable for adding a discount code to your link and/or linking directly to your product's checkout page.

Or, click the Embed tab to grab the code for adding a Buy my product button to your website:

You can similarly also add a discount code to your button.

How do I unpublish products?

To unpublish a product, click Publish at the top left of the product builder, followed by Unpublish Product at the bottom right of the window that pops up. (See the screenshots above for reference.)

Unpublishing a product puts it into draft mode.

Unpublished products will no longer be available for new buyers to purchase, but you'll retain all of the product's historical data for your reference.

Previous buyers will continue to have access to their purchased content.

You can choose to republish your product again in the future or leave it unpublished indefinitely.

How do I offer my product at a discount?

This can be accomplished using discount code links. Learn more in our dedicated tutorial on offering a discount.

How do I edit my product's details (name, price, etc.) after creating it?

From the top left of the product builder, click Settings (to the left of the Save button):

Edit Product - Kit - Google Chrome 2024-10-10 at 12.47.50 PM

This will bring up a Product Settings window, from which you can change some of the details you set during the product creation flow. Use the tabs on the left to navigate through the other settings:

If a certain setting you want to change is not editable, you will have to create a new product with your new settings.

How do I test-purchase my product?

You can make a test purchase in two ways:

  1. Complete the purchase as usual, and then issue yourself a refund. Note that processing fees won't be refunded.

  2. Use a 100% discount. Create a discount code, and then use it to "purchase" your product for $0. You'll still need to enter a credit card, but you won’t be charged.

Don't forget to set up payments if you haven't done so already! This is a prerequisite for publishing your products, so you won't be able to start selling until you've done it. We have a separate tutorial on this below. 👇
