Billing at Kit

What you can expect to see on your bill and why.

Updated this week

At Kit, we charge for only your active subscribers.

We're subscriber-centric, rather than list-centric. This means we bill based on your number of confirmed subscribers.

We don't charge extra for features, like Tags and Segments, or even emails sent. You will be charged for only your active subscribers!

You can find pricing details for all of our plans right here.

Let’s dive into some details, including:

DISCLAIMER: This article is neither financial advice nor tax advice. We recommend that you speak to your tax advisor with any questions or concerns about planning for your taxes.

Adding your billing information

Certain states require us to charge our customers sales tax. To handle this, all we need to know is your billing address (this applies to customers in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia).

To add your billing address to your account, head over to your billing information (click your account name at the top right > Settings > Account & Billing).

Scroll down to the Billing Address section to fill out your billing address:

Click Save changes at the bottom of the screen to save your billing address.

Sales tax and billing address

Your billing address determines whether sales tax needs to be applied and the rate charged. For example, if your billing address is in New York, the New York state sales tax will apply and appear as a line item in your receipt.

In some states, the rate varies by county, making your exact billing address especially important. Always keep your billing address updated, especially if you’ve moved.

If you’re outside of the U.S., we still collect your billing address to ensure accuracy in our records and to prepare for future VAT collection.

Example of sales tax on your invoice

Let’s say you’re based in Idaho and on the $39 plan:

  • If we implement sales tax on November 1st and your billing date is November 5th, and sales tax (6%) applies, your next invoice would be:

    • $39 (plan cost) + $2.34 (sales tax) = $41.34 total

A popup will appear for you to upgrade to the Creator Pro plan.

Switch from a monthly plan to an annual plan

Switch from an annual plan to a monthly plan

Contact us using the in-app messenger and request to switch from an annual plan to a monthly plan. The switch will happen at the end of the annual billing cycle.

Downgrade from the Creator Pro plan

Go to your account settings' Account & Billing tab and click the Downgrade button.

Downgrade to a lower subscriber tier

If you've cleaned your list or removed subscribers, you may be able to move to a lower subscriber tier and reduce your monthly cost.

Example: You have 1,200 subscribers and pay $59/mo for the Creator plan. After cleaning your list, you have 800 subscribers. You can now downgrade to the 1,000-subscriber tier and pay $39/mo instead.

How to downgrade:

  1. Go to Account & Billing tab in your account settings.

  2. If you're eligible, you'll see a "Switch to a lower tier" link. Click this link.

  3. Review the popup showing your current tier and the lowest tier you can switch to.

  4. Click OK, understood to confirm.

  5. You'll see a confirmation on the Account & Billing page.

When the change takes effect:

Your downgrade will apply on your next billing date as long as your subscriber count is still below the lower tier's limit on that date. If there's an even lower tier available, we will adjust it to the lowest possible tier.

If you've gained subscribers and your count is above the new tier's limit by your billing date, you'll stay on your current tier. You can downgrade later if your subscriber count drops again.

Understanding your Kit bill

The two keys to understanding your bill are that:

  1. We charge for the billing period ahead. This means when you pay your $39 monthly bill on January 1, for example, you're paying for up to 1,000 subscribers from January 1 to January 31.

  2. We always pro-rate for plan upgrades.

If you upgrade plans during your billing period, your next bill will reflect the following:

  • A refund of the pro-rated amount for the unused time on your existing plan, and

  • A charge for a pro-rated amount for the remaining time on your new plan.

Here's an example:

  • On March 1, you paid $39 for the month of March.

  • On March 21, you are upgraded to the next tier, the $59/mo plan.

  • We refund the 10 days of the $39 plan you didn't use—($12.67). This is your Unused Time.

  • We charge you for the 10 days on the upgraded plan—$19.67. This is your Remaining Time.

  • We take the sum of the credit and the charge—$7—and add it to your next bill.

  • So on April 1, you are charged $59 + $7 = $66.

If you downgrade your subscriber tier, the process is a little different:

Let's say you have 1,200 subscribers and pay $59/mo for the Creator plan. After cleaning your list, you have 800 subscribers. You can now downgrade to the 1,000-subscriber tier and pay $39/mo instead.

Here's what happens when you downgrade your subscriber tier:

  • On March 1, you paid $59 for the month of March.

  • On March 21, you scheduled a downgrade to the lower $39/mo plan.

  • On April 1, you have 800 subscribers. You're eligible for the lower subscriber tier, so we move you to the 1,000-subscriber tier and charge you $39 for the month of April.

We apply the same policies when billing for changes to annual plans.

How is our annual plan different from our monthly plan?

We're here for the long term. If you are too, then we've got a deal for you. Our annual plans offer 12 months for the price of 10.

Huzzah!

NOTE: Because of the bargain price, we do not offer refunds beyond our standard 30-day refund policy.

Our refund policy

We understand things don't always work out. If you do have to leave, then we want what's best for you.

We have a 30-day refund policy, so if you cancel, you can request any funds paid in the last 30 days to be refunded in full.

Our 30-day refund policy applies to all plans, including annual plans. However, we do not refund or pro-rate payments made more than 30 days prior to the request.

Why is there a $1 charge on your credit card statement?

Whenever you add or change the credit card on file in your account, our payment partner Stripe will run a $1 verification charge.

This verification helps to ensure that the card is a legitimate form of payment. It’s also checking for available funds.

The charge is only temporary. It will be automatically removed from your credit card statement after seven days.

What happens if you cancel your account?

When you cancel your account, it will remain active until the last day of your billing period.

How to customize the billing information in your Kit receipts

Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to your account settings

  2. Click the Account & Billing tab

  3. Click the View Billing History button under the Billing History section

  4. Click ⚙️ Receipt Settings

  5. A modal will appear, where you can add information like your billing address or VAT number.
