All about adding and formatting text in the Kit email editor — including headings, lists, links, buttons, and more!

Updated today

This is part 2 of a 3-part series about the Kit email editor:

  1. The email editor: text formatting —📍You are here

All the text formatting options you need to start composing.

Text is the most fundamental building block of any email. Here's how to format your text to make it shine.

NOTE: After you've got text formatting down pat, check out our guide to adding media like images, HTML, and more.

Just start typing

If you type into the email editor, your text will be converted to a paragraph text block by default.

From here, you can continue typing, format the text further, or convert it to another paragraph style (like a heading or list).

Formatting text

To format text, highlight it using your cursor. You can then format the highlighted text using the toolbar options at the top of the email editor.

For example, this is how you'd bold your highlighted text:

From left to right, the toolbar has these formatting options:

  • Change the text to a paragraph, heading, bulleted list, numbered list, or blockquote

  • Undo

  • Redo

  • Bold

  • Italicize

  • Underline

  • Strikethrough

  • Text alignment (left, center, right, justify)

  • Font size

  • Text color

  • Highlight

Adding links

To change your text to a link, highlight the text and click the Link icon in the toolbar. (It looks like a paper clip.)

Key in your link URL, and then click the Apply button (or hit the Enter button on your keyboard) to turn your text into a link.

To unlink text, delete its URL from the Link setting and click the Apply button.

If you don't highlight your text before keying in your link URL, we will use the link URL as the text for your link. Like this:

NOTE: You can also turn your text into a Link Trigger via the link menu. More on how to do this here.

Headings, lists, and more

To add text formatted as a heading, list, or blockquote, you have two options:

1. Convert an existing text block

To convert existing text (such as a paragraph) to another text format, first click in the block it's contained in, and then click the ¶ icon in the email editor toolbar. Select the heading type to which you'd like to convert the text.

Here's an example of changing paragraph text to Heading 1 format:

2. Insert directly

Alternatively, you can click any part of your email and select your desired text format in the toolbar. The editor will automatically create a text block in that format, and then you can start typing from there.

Here's an example of adding a bulleted list:

At this point, we've covered basic text formatting and how to create text blocks, including converting between different types of text formats.

Next, let's go over common text-related content block menu items and how to use them.

Buttons

Adding buttons is a great way of creating more eye-catching calls to action than linked text.

To add a button, click the part of your email where you want the button to be. Next, click the plus (+) button to the left to open the content block menu. Then, click Button from the content block menu.

Alternatively, type "/button" on your keyboard to call up the button content block directly.

Once you've added the button, customize it. Click the button to reveal the editing menu in the right sidebar:

Add the URL you want your button to link to, and then customize the visual styling to your liking.

To edit your button's CTA, simply type directly into it:

Personalization

You can easily add personalization shortcodes to your email using the email editor's toolbar.

Click the part of your email where you want to add the personalization shortcode. Then, select the @ icon from the toolbar. A personalization dropdown menu will appear.

Select the relevant personalization option, and its shortcode will be inserted into your email.
