How to customize your Kit subscribers' experience on your WordPress website

Tag subscribers who visit your website, display custom website content, and make your WordPress content members-only.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Tailor what subscribers see on your WordPress website

Our Kit WordPress plugin is amazingly powerful! Once you've installed it on your WordPress website, you can:

(You can also display your Kit Forms and other content on your WordPress website, as covered in our separate guide.)

Let's get into the steps for doing these.

Tag subscribers who visit a certain post or page

With this feature, you can keep track of subscribers who have visited a certain post or page and tailor your interactions with them after that.

For instance, you could:

  • Add subscribers who have been tagged with "Viewed Webinar Registration Page" to a Visual Automation that sends them emails following up on their interest in your webinar

  • Promote your photography course to subscribers tagged with "Viewed Photography Blog Posts"

Start by launching the editor for the relevant post, page, or WooCommerce product page.

Scroll to the Kit plugin settings at the bottom of the editor, and then use the Add a Tag setting to select a Tag that should be applied to subscribers who visit that page.

After that, enable the addition of the subscriber_id parameter to your email links in your Kit account if you haven't already. Doing this helps us track your subscribers' activity on your website and tag them appropriately.

Make your WordPress content members-only

Make your posts, pages, custom post types, or WooCommerce product pages available to only subscribers who have:

  • Subscribed to a certain Kit Form,

  • Been tagged with a certain Kit Tag, or

  • Bought a certain Kit product.

To set this up, launch the editor for the post or page you want to make members-only.

Scroll to the Kit plugin settings at the bottom of the editor. Use the Member Content setting to select the Form, Tag, or Kit product that visitors must have to view your content.

Here's what each option means:

Option

What the option does

How visitors can access the content

Form

Displays your selected Kit Form on the page

  • Visitors need to subscribe to this Form to access your content.

  • Existing subscribers can enter their email address to receive an access link by email

Tag

Displays the Kit plugin's Form on the page. This Form's design will follow your WordPress theme more closely than Forms created in Kit.

  • Visitors need to subscribe to this Form to view your content. They will be tagged with your selected Tag after subscribing.

  • If the Require Login setting under Settings in the left sidebar > Kit > Member Content > Tags is checked, subscribers (both existing and new ones) will need to log in to access the content. To do this, they'll enter their email address to receive an access link by email. Requiring logins is helpful for ensuring subscribers' email addresses are valid.

  • If the Require Login setting under Settings in the left sidebar > Kit > Member Content > Tags is not checked, subscribers (both existing and new ones) can immediately access the content after entering their email address. Not requiring logins reduces friction in the signup process, but may allow more lower-quality subscribers to join your list. We recommend enabling reCAPTCHA under the Settings > Kit > Member Content > Tags settings if you choose not to require logins.

Product

Displays on the page a button that links to your selected Kit product

  • Visitors need to click the button and purchase the product to view your content.

  • Buyers can enter their email address to receive an access link by email

You can create two types of members-only content:

Follow the applicable steps below for setting up the amount of content you want to make available to non-members, and publish your page as usual.

When you're done, customize the text that visitors see when interacting with members-only content.

Make a whole post or page members-only

Under this option, the post, page, custom post type, or WooCommerce product page will show a short preview of the start of your content, with the rest being members-only.

Make part of a page members-only

Under this option, you can create pages that partially contain members-only content. Think of this as adding a "Read More" divider to the page, where only members can view the content below it.

There are three ways of adjusting the amount of content available to non-members:

Use the Member Content wizard

To set this up, click the Add New > Member Content button at the top of the Pages page.

The Member Content wizard will launch:

Select the type of members-only content you are offering (such as a paid download or a course), and then configure the content using the provided fields.

When you've completed the setup, you'll be directed to the page editor. Add your members-only content below the content accessible to all visitors.

Use the post's Excerpt field

If you're making a post members-only, you can add content to the Excerpt field, and it'll appear before the members-only content.

NOTE: If your Excerpt field supports HTML tags, you can use inline CSS to style its content.

Add a Read More tag

Add a Read More tag at the relevant part of the page to make the rest of the content members-only.

The option for adding the tag looks like this in the Classic Editor:

And it looks like this in the Block Editor. Ensure that you select the More block and not the Read More one:

Customize your Member Content text

Click Settings on your WordPress sidebar, followed by Kit.

Navigate to the Member Content tab and customize your subscribe text, subscribe button text, email text, and more. You can also choose whether to let search engine crawlers access your members-only content for indexing purposes.

Click the Save Changes button to update your settings.

Display custom website content based on Tags

Our WordPress plugin can track the Kit Tags that your website visitors have, and then show them different website content accordingly.

This is helpful for situations such as:

  • Changing your blog content for repeat visitors

  • Upselling different products on your sales pages to existing customers

If you intend to make part of your page available to subscribers with a certain Tag, follow the process for making your WordPress content members-only instead.

The custom content feature is available only on the WordPress Classic Editor at this time, so install and activate the Classic Editor plugin on your website if you'll be displaying custom content on a post or page.

NOTE: There's no need to install the plugin if you intend to display custom content on WooCommerce product pages. That's because these pages currently use the Classic Editor by default.

Next, navigate to the post, page, or WooCommerce product page on which you want to display custom content.

At the place in your content where you want your custom content to appear, click the Kit Custom Content icon on the Classic Editor's toolbar:

In the window that pops up, select the Kit Tag that website visitors need to have to view your custom content:

Click Insert, and we'll add shortcode tags associated with your chosen Kit Tag.

Fill out your custom content between the shortcode's start and end tags. This content will be displayed to subscribers with the chosen Kit Tag.

Last but not least, enable the addition of the subscriber_id parameter to your email links in your Kit account if you haven't already. This helps us identify subscribers visiting your website, and their Tags, so we can show them the right content.
