The Confirmation Email

The confirmation email is the first email new subscribers to your list will receive. Here's how to set it up!

As the first touch with your subscribers, your confirmation email can be a powerful first impression.

It's easy to dismiss your confirmation email (also known as an auto responder) as "just" the double opt-in. However, this email is part of what sets the tone for your list!

Here's how to set it up.

Confirmation email settings

Start by navigating to your Form or Landing Page (or create a new one here).

To access your confirmation email settings, first click Settings in the toolbar across the top of the Form/Landing Page builder:

The confirmation email settings will be located under the Incentive tab:

☝️ The above configuration has the Auto-confirm new subscribers setting unchecked. This means it has the double opt-in turned on, which we strongly recommend. Find out why here.

Now, let's walk through the settings.

Send confirmation email

This enables the confirmation email. It's optional—if you'd prefer to not have a confirmation email associated with your Form or Landing Page, simply uncheck this box.

⚠️ PLEASE NOTE: Disabling the confirmation email will also disable double opt-in.

Auto-confirm new subscribers

This checkbox determines whether your subscribers will be required to click the link in the confirmation email in order to become confirmed on your list. To enable double opt-in (highly recommended), you'll want to leave this unchecked.

If you want your subscribers to be automatically confirmed on your list whether or not they click the button in the confirmation email, then you can check this box.

NOTE: For more information on unconfirmed subscribers, please read our guide here.

After confirming redirect to

This is what determines what happens after the subscriber clicks the button in your confirmation email. You can either upload a file for them to download (such as a freebie/lead magnet), or you can send them to a URL of your choosing (such as a thank you page): To attach downloadable files, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your landing page's Settings tab.

  2. Navigate to the Confirmation Email or Incentive section.

    • If you want to offer a download, select "Download."

    • Click Choose a file to upload your file.

  3. Wait for the file to upload and ensure to save changes. Further details can be found in the Confirmation Email Guide.

NOTE: By default, your confirmation email will redirect to our default confirmation page: https://app.kit.com/confirm-subscription—You are welcome to use this page (please note it cannot be edited), or you can replace the default confirmation page URL with your own URL! If you need to replace an older file, such as updating a lead magnet PDF:

  1. Go to the Incentive section in your landing page settings.

  2. Select Download and click Choose a file to upload the updated version.

  3. Save your changes to ensure the new file is used for future emails.

Editing the confirmation email

The default confirmation email content will look something like the following in your subscribers' inboxes:

NOTE: Your confirmation email will use your account's default email template, so its appearance may vary accordingly.

It's functional, but you'll probably want to personalize it a bit more. Luckily, that's easy to do. Just click the Edit Email Contents button from the confirmation email settings modal:

This will open up the confirmation email editor, which is the same email editor as the one for Broadcasts and Sequences! From here, you can modify the sending address, subject line, and email contents:

To brush up on our email editor functionality, please check out our dedicated tutorial here.

NOTE: Personalization code will not work in the confirmation email's subject line, but it will work in the email's body!

Steps to Add a PDF to the Email:

  1. Head to the "Settings" tab of your form or landing page.

  2. Check the box for "Send Confirmation Email."

  3. Under the incentive section:

    • Select Download.

    • Click Choose a file to upload the PDF.

  4. Customize the email content using the "Edit Email Contents" option.

Once you're done editing your confirmation email, click Save at the bottom.

(And if you made other changes to your Form or Landing Page, make sure you save those changes as well via the Save button near the top right of the builder, and then publish your changes by hitting Publish.)

☝️ Pro-tip: Keep it simple

Don't forget: simple emails tend to perform better. Feel free to personalize your confirmation email to match your brand. However, we recommend not going overboard with additional content and styling.

Ultimately, you don't want to distract your subscribers from clicking that confirmation button!

Managing and Replacing Files

To keep your confirmation email content up-to-date, you may need to replace or update downloadable files occasionally. If you need to update a file such as a lead magnet:

  1. Go to the Incentive section in your landing page settings.

  2. Select Download and upload the new file by clicking Choose a file.

  3. Ensure you save changes to implement the updated content in future emails.
