The email editor: adding media

How to add and edit media in the Kit email editor, including images, files, HTML blocks, custom content snippets, and more.

Updated this week

This is part 3 of a 3-part series about the Kit email editor:

  1. The email editor: adding media —📍You are here!

How to add images (and more) to Kit emails

There are several different types of media you can add to your Kit emails! Images are one, of course—but also video (in an email-friendly way!), HTML, and more.

In this article, we'll cover each media option, as well as the settings they each have available. Let's jump in!

NOTE: Working with just words for now? We have a separate guide dedicated to text formatting here.

Images

If you select Image from the content block menu (more info on that menu and how to access it here), the media gallery will load. Use it to add an image to your email.

Once you've done so, click your image to reveal a menu of additional formatting options in the right sidebar:

From this menu, you can add alt text, add a URL to turn your image into a link, and adjust some visual styles on the right (which includes the option to enable text wrapping).

You can even click the Edit button to use our built-in image editor to edit your image directly within Kit!

Image galleries

Showcase a curated gallery of images in your email! This feature is very similar to image galleries on landing pages.

Select Gallery from the content block menu, and populate the placeholders with images of your choosing:

To adjust the styling of your image gallery, click anywhere in your gallery to display image gallery settings in the right sidebar of the email editor.

You'll be able to adjust your gallery's corner roundedness, number of columns, and image crop settings:

To adjust the settings for a particular image, click the image directly to populate image-specific options on the sidebar.

From there, you can select whether to optimize your image, add a URL to it, or adjust its alt text:

To remove the image, click it and hit either the "Delete" or "Backspace" button on your keyboard.

Files

You can add links to files, such as PDFs, in your emails that your subscribers can download by clicking on them.

You have two options here: you can select File from the content block menu in an empty block, and you'll be prompted to select which file you want to upload from your computer.

This method will insert the file as a text link, using the filename. For example:

If you want to customize the linked text instead of using the filename, first type your text as normal paragraph text. Then, highlight it > select the content block menu > select File:

Upload your file when prompted, and voilà! Now, your custom text is linked to the file instead of the filename.

Videos

If your video is hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, or Wistia, you can use the Video option from the content block menu to embed your video in your email:

Alternatively, paste the video link directly into your email.

If you've hosted your video on a platform that isn't on YouTube, Vimeo, or Wistia, simply upload a screenshot of it using the Image option from the content block menu, and then add the video link to the URL field of the image menu (see Images section above).

You can also upload a video from your computer by clicking the Upload tab, followed by Upload video.

Dividers

Adding a divider using the Divider option is a great way of visually splitting up different sections of your email.

The default divider is a subtle gray separator:

You can also use the settings in the right sidebar to customize your divider's look.

HTML blocks

Selecting HTML Block from the content block menu will insert an empty HTML block in your email:

Click the Edit button and enter your HTML in the modal that pops up:

When you're done, click Save.

NOTE: You can also add inline CSS to an HTML block. The process is the same as adding it to an email template (more on that here); you're just doing it in a specific email instead.

X/Twitter embeds

You can embed tweets directly in your emails! (And on Landing Pages, too.) We have a separate tutorial on this here.

Snippets

Inserting content snippets is a great way of dynamically adding reusable content to your emails!

We have a dedicated guide to using content snippets here. When your snippet is ready, you can insert it into any email by selecting Snippet from the content block menu.
