Move your email templates from Mailchimp to Kit
Coming over from Mailchimp? Welcome!
In this guide, we'll cover how you can recreate your Mailchimp email templates in Kit. We recommend you read the whole article, but feel free to jump to whichever section you need if you are already an advanced user:
Open your Mailchimp email template
In your Mailchimp dashboard, open the email template you'd like to recreate in Kit. As a demo, we're going to recreate this Mailchimp email template:
The standard elements of this email template are:
The header image and logo at the top,
The email body's text styles (such as font and font color), and
The footer at the bottom.
Therefore, we're going to recreate these three elements in our Kit email template.
That said, if you're wondering how to set up the fancy text layouts seen in this email, keep reading as we'll cover this briefly too!
Create a new Kit email template
NOTE: As you recreate your Mailchimp email template, we suggest keeping it open in a separate browser tab for convenient reference.
Launch your Kit dashboard. Click the Send tab in the top navigation, followed by Email Templates.
Click the + New email template button to create a new email template.
Next, choose one of our email templates to use as the foundation of your recreated email template.
Try to pick one that resembles your Mailchimp email template the most closely. But don't worry if it isn't a 100% match—you'll be able to customize your Kit email template further!
For this article, we're going to select the Platform template.
Customize your Kit email template
Now here's the fun part! Use our visual email template editor to customize your Kit email template such that it contains the standard elements of your Mailchimp email template.
This can include:
Inserting images (including your logo)
To insert images, click the section of the template where the image should go. You'll see a + button pop up on the left.
Click that button, followed by "Image" to insert an image.
NOTE: If your template already contains a placeholder image, you can click the image, followed by the Replace button in the right sidebar to replace the image with your own.
When you click your newly added image, you'll get settings in the right sidebar for adjusting your image's width, alignment, URL, and so on.
You can also change the header image by clicking your email's header section, followed by the Background image setting in the right sidebar's Section tab.
Changing the email template's colors
Click the relevant sections of your template to change its colors.
In this case, we're going to change our email template's background color to match our Mailchimp email template's footer color.
Changing the email template's standard text and text settings
If you have any default text that will appear in all your emails, add them to your Kit email template. For example, you can place your:
Header text in the header section
Section headings in the email template body
Footer text in the footer section
After adding your text to the email template, click the text to display settings in the right sidebar for changing its font, color, line height, and more.
You can also click the email template's existing placeholder body text to adjust its font, color, and so on to match your Mailchimp template's body text.
Here's the finished look of our recreated Mailchimp email template in Kit:
Repeat this process for all the Mailchimp email templates that you need to recreate in Kit.
Because our visual email template editor works differently from Mailchimp's email builder, you may not be able to get your Kit email template to look identical to your Mailchimp one. That's okay!
Take the opportunity to improve the look of your email template, and make it even better than before.

Use your new Kit email template!
Afterward, set your new Kit email template as the email template for that Broadcast or Sequence. Here's how to do so in the Broadcast editor, for example:
As for Sequences, you'll select your email template in the Settings page of the Sequence editor.
Then, go ahead to fill out the contents of your Broadcast or Sequence!
If you're looking to add an image gallery or content layout, click the body of your email and the + button will appear on the left.
From there, select "Gallery" or "Layout" to insert an image gallery or content layout to your email respectively.
For more info on adding content to your Broadcast and Sequence emails, visit our guide to the Kit email editor. You can also contact our migrations team if you need help recreating your Mailchimp email templates in Kit.
