Your checklist for a smooth migration from GetResponse
Migrating your email setup from GetResponse to Kit can seem intimidating if you're new to our platform.
Let's walk through the general process for moving everything over as painlessly as possible.
Familiarize yourself with Kit's terminology
Our names for certain Kit features are different from their GetResponse counterparts. The table below provides an overview of what's different (and what's the same).
Check it out and take some time to understand our terminology—this knowledge will come in handy as you navigate our platform.
Definition / Feature | GetResponse terminology | Kit terminology |
A person who joins your email list | Contact | Subscriber |
Your collection of email addresses | List | List
NOTE: While you can have multiple lists in GetResponse, you'll have only one list for all subscribers in your Kit account. Learn more about our subscriber-centric approach here. |
Group subscribers with shared characteristics | Tag
Dynamically group subscribers who match certain conditions | Segment
Collecting subscribers | Form / Popup / Landing page |
NOTE: Popups are one type of Form you can create in Kit. |
Design the look and contents of your emails | Template
Send a one-off email | Newsletter
Send an automated email (or a series of them) | Automated message / Autoresponder
Trigger actions based on subscriber behavior | Automation
Feature your business and emails on a website | Creator's profile
Charge for access to your newsletter content | Premium newsletter |
Import your contacts
To bring over your subscribers, go to the Subscribers page in Kit under the navigation's Grow tab. Click the Add Subscribers button, followed by Other provider.
Select the Click here to get your GetResponse API key button to copy your GetResponse account's API key. Paste it into the field provided, and then click Start import.
Your GetResponse subscribers will be imported to your Kit account, along with any tags they have.
Instead of automatically importing subscribers via API key, you can export your subscriber data as a CSV file for importing into Kit. This is helpful if you want more control over the subscriber data you bring over. More details on importing subscribers via a CSV file here.
Recreate your segments
Go to the Subscribers page in Kit under the navigation's Grow tab. Then, click + Create a Segment in the right sidebar to create a new Segment.
Give your Segment a name, and then set up its conditions to match its GetResponse counterpart.
For example, if your GetResponse segment contains all contacts with any autoresponder setting, who subscribed any time, and are assigned to the "Newsletter" tag, your Kit Segment condition would be "Match all subscribers subscribed to the 'Newsletter' Tag." (The autoresponder and subscription time conditions are redundant in this case.)
Recreate your forms, popups, and landing pages
Select the Grow tab in the navigation, followed by Landing Pages & Forms, to launch the Landing Page & Forms screen.
From there, click the + Create new button to create a new Kit Form or Landing Page.
Choose a Form or Landing Page template that matches your GetResponse form, popup, or landing page the most closely. If you're recreating a GetResponse popup, select the modal Form format.
Then, use our Form or Landing Page builder to customize your Kit Form or Landing Page (as relevant).
Given the differences between our and GetResponse's builders, you may not be able to make your Kit Form or Landing Page look exactly the same as your GetResponse one. But use this opportunity to revamp the look of your forms, popups, and landing pages!
Then, when you're happy with your Kit Forms and Landing Pages, publish and replace your GetResponse ones with them. 🧹

Recreate your email templates
Go to Email Templates under the navigation's Send tab to create a new email template in Kit.
Select an email template that resembles your GetResponse email template the most closely, and then use our visual email template editor to customize the template.
Try to design the template's text, colors, and fonts such that it looks similar to—or even better than!—its GetResponse counterpart.
Recreate your automated messages and autoresponders
Recreating your GetResponse automated messages and autoresponders involves setting up Sequences in Kit.
A Sequence is a set of automated emails sent according to preset send schedules. To send the emails in your Sequence, you'll need to add the Sequence to a Kit Visual Automation (more on this in the next section).
Start a new Kit Sequence by clicking the navigation's Send tab, followed by Sequences, and finally the + New sequence button.
Select a default email template for your Sequence. (You'll be able to change your email template for specific Sequence emails afterward.)
Copy/paste the contents of your GetResponse automated message or autoresponder into the Sequence, adding extra Sequence emails as you need.
If you're recreating an autoresponder, you'll also need to set up the Sequence emails' Send Days.
For example, if a contact previously received your GetResponse autoresponder at the same time as their signup time, then set the Send Day for your Kit Sequence's first email to 0 days after the last email.
This way, the email will be sent immediately.
Recreate your automations
Go to Visual Automations from the navigation's Automate tab. Click + New automation, followed by Start from scratch, to start a blank new Visual Automation.
First, recreate your GetResponse automation's conditions as your Kit Visual Automation's entry points.
Then, add Visual Automation steps corresponding to your GetResponse automation's actions and filters.
For example, if your GetResponse automation sends contacts one automated message after they subscribe via a specific form, you could set up your Kit Visual Automation like this:
Entry point: Subscriber joins a Form
Step: Add subscriber to a Sequence—where you've set up this Sequence as one email that's sent immediately
Recreate your Creator's profile
Go to Creator Profile under the navigation's Grow tab to recreate your GetResponse Creator's profile as a Kit Creator Profile.
For example, you can customize your creator business name, colors, and fonts.
When you're done, publish your changes. Then, open your Creator Profile, grab its link from your browser address bar, and replace your old GetResponse Creator's profile links with it.
NOTE: If you'd like, you can feature your past GetResponse newsletters on your Kit Creator Profile. More details in our guide to migrating a newsletter archive to your Creator Profile.
Recreate your premium newsletter
To recreate your premium newsletter, create a paid newsletter product using our Kit Commerce feature.
Set up payments for your Kit account first. After that, follow the steps in this guide to creating a paid newsletter in Kit to set up your paid newsletter product.
At this time, there is no convenient method of migrating your premium newsletter subscribers' subscriptions (with their payment details) to Kit.
Here's a workaround:
Cancel all your premium newsletter subscriptions in GetResponse, and then
Ask your premium newsletter subscribers to re-subscribe to your Kit paid newsletter.
We also recommend informing your premium newsletter subscribers of your migration plans in advance.
This way, they won't get a rude shock when their subscriptions are canceled. You'll also have time to sort out any refund requests you get as you switch platforms.
Test your migrated email setup
After recreating your GetResponse email setup in Kit, test that it works.
You can do this by:
Previewing your Forms, Landing Pages, and Creator Profile to confirm they look good. Preview your Forms on your website, if possible.
Previewing your Sequence emails from the Kit Sequence editor or by sending yourself a test email.
Testing your Visual Automations. Enter your Visual Automations from one of their entry points (such as subscribing to your own Form) and check what happens after that.
Sending a test edition of your paid newsletter to yourself before you start sending to paid subscribers.
If you're having trouble with your GetResponse migration, reach out to our migrations team and they'll be happy to help out!
Otherwise, if all is good, you could start sending newsletters to your subscribers.
