How to recreate your Mailchimp email campaigns as Kit Email Sequences

Create a new Kit Email Sequence, transfer the contents of your Mailchimp email campaigns, then set up your send settings.

Kit Email Sequences = Mailchimp email campaigns, but better

To set up a series of automated emails in Mailchimp, you'd create a "customer journey" containing your email campaigns and time delay rules to introduce a send delay between each email.

But to do the same in Kit, you'd create a "Email Sequence." These are self-contained sets of emails with their own automated send schedules.

So, if you're coming over from Mailchimp and want to recreate your Mailchimp email campaigns as Kit Email Sequences, you'll need to:

  1. Copy/paste the contents of your Mailchimp email campaigns over to Kit Email Sequence emails, and

  2. Set up your Mailchimp email campaigns' send settings in your Kit Email Sequences.

In this guide, we'll get into how to do both. You'll need a decent understanding of the Kit email editor to recreate your Mailchimp email campaigns, so we recommend reading our guide to the email editor if you aren't familiar with it.

NOTE: This article focuses on recreating email campaigns in Mailchimp customer journeys as Kit Email Sequences.

Recreating the contents of your Mailchimp email campaigns

Recreating the email subject

Log in to Mailchimp in one browser tab, and open the customer journey containing the email campaigns you want to recreate in Kit. Keep this browser tab open for convenient reference.

Next, open Kit in a separate browser tab and click Email Sequences under the Send tab of the top navigation.

Select the + New email sequence button to create a blank new Email Sequence and choose a default email template for it.

Go back to Mailchimp, and click the first email campaign in your Mailchimp customer journey to access its settings.

Copy your email campaign's subject and paste it into the subject line of the first email in your Kit Email Sequence.

Recreating the email body

Switch back to your Mailchimp email campaign, and click Edit Email Content to access the campaign's body.

Similarly, copy/paste the text in the body of your Mailchimp email campaign into your Kit Email Sequence email.

To insert images into your Email Sequence emails, click the area in the email editor in which you'd like to add the image.

Click the + button that appears on the left to launch the content block menu, then select "Image" to upload and insert your image.

Click the image itself, followed by the Styles section in the right sidebar, to access image settings like adding an image URL or adjusting the image width.

Using the content block menu, you can also add other content like headings, lists, galleries, and buttons.

To learn more, check out our guides to text formatting and adding media to your emails.

When you've finished recreating the contents of your first Mailchimp email campaign, click the Add Email button in the right sidebar to add new emails to your Email Sequence.

Repeat the recreation of your email subject and body for all the email campaigns in your Mailchimp customer journey.

Recreating the send settings for your Mailchimp email campaigns

For every email campaign in a Mailchimp customer journey, you'll be able to set up its:

  • "To" and "From" email address

  • Send schedule (i.e., the days and times on which your email should be sent)

Here's how to recreate these settings in Kit:

Setting the "To" and "From" email address

In Kit, we set the "To" email address to your subscriber's email address by default. At the moment, we don't offer the option to change this to a combination of your subscriber's first and last names, unlike in Mailchimp.

However, you can set your Email Sequence's "From" email address. To do this, click Settings at the top right of the Email Sequence editor.

Then, click the "Send emails as" field to select one of your existing "From" email addresses.

NOTE: To add a new "From" email address, go to the Email tab in your account settings.

Setting the send schedule

Go to the Settings tab in the Email Sequence editor. Under the "Email Sequence Schedule" section, set the days and time on which your Email Sequence emails should be sent.

NOTE: While Mailchimp allows you to set a time interval for the sending of your emails, such as between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, we ask you to select a specific time around which your emails should be sent, such as around 5:00 pm.

The "Email Sequence Schedule" settings affect all the emails in your Email Sequence. However, you can adjust the Send Days of specific emails through their individual "Send this email" setting.

For example, you may set up the Email Sequence Schedule to have your Email Sequence emails sent only on weekdays. From there, you can additionally configure the "Send this email" setting of one Email Sequence email to have that email sent only on Mondays.

In the same "Send this email" setting, you can also specify the duration of delay between your Email Sequence emails (in day or hour intervals). This would be similar to adding a time delay rule in between emails in a Mailchimp customer journey.

For instance, if you had set up a time delay of one day between the sending of two emails in your Mailchimp customer journey, then set up the second email in your Kit Email Sequence to be sent one day after the last email.

NOTE: If you want the first email in your Email Sequence to be sent immediately, set the "Send this email" setting to 0 days after the last email.

Publish your Email Sequence emails

To activate your Kit Email Sequence, be sure to enable the Published setting for every email in the Email Sequence. Otherwise, the emails will not be sent.

And congrats—you've completed a basic recreation of the email campaigns in your Mailchimp customer journey as a Kit Email Sequence.

Kit Email Sequences are powerful, also having options for:

  • Editing preview text

  • Excluding subscribers from receiving certain Email Sequence emails

  • Letting subscribers restart an Email Sequence they've already completed
