How to add programmatic ads to your emails

Learn the steps for adding programmatic ads to your Kit emails and previewing them before sending your email.

Updated this week

With Kit Ads, you can add programmatic ads to your emails to earn extra revenue.

Here's how to do this for both Broadcast and Sequence emails.

1. Set up and enable programmatic ads

If you haven't set up Kit Ads, you'll need to do this first.

We may take up to 48 business hours to approve your account for running ads.

Next, double-check that programmatic ads are enabled. To do this, go to the Ads dashboard, and click Settings at the top right.

Then, enable the Programmatic ads toggle in the Ads Settings window if it isn't already.

2. Add an Ad Slot to your email

Open the email draft in which you want to add an ad.

Hover your cursor over the left side of the part of the email where you want to add an ad. Click the + icon that appears to display the content block menu, and then select Ad.

An Ad Slot will be added to your email.

Repeat this step to add more ads to your email. Each email can contain up to three Ad Slots.

NOTE: If you can't find the Ad option in the content block menu, this could be because:

  • You haven't set up your account for Kit Ads. Follow the steps here to do so.

  • You've set up your account for Kit Ads, but we haven't approved your account yet. We may take up to 48 business hours to approve your account after you've set it up. If it's taking longer than that, reach out to our support team for help.

If you insert only one Ad Slot, it will be filled with a main ad. A main ad usually contains text and a picture, and generates more revenue.

If you insert multiple Ad Slots:

  • The first ad in the email will be the "top ad": This is usually a display-only ad in a banner format

  • The second ad in the email will be the main ad

  • The third ad in the email will be the "bottom ad": This is usually a display-only ad in a banner format

Although inserting more ads means more revenue opportunity, it's best to match the number of ads to your email's length.

For example, shorter emails (i.e., emails with fewer than 200 words) should contain only one Ad Slot to maintain content balance.

3. Preview the ad

Each Ad Slot will appear as an empty ad placeholder in your email.

When you send your email, we'll automatically display a programmatic ad(s) where you've inserted the Ad Slot(s).

Kit Ads is currently served to only U.S.-based subscribers. If you aren't based in the U.S., you will not see an ad in your email even if you've added an Ad Slot.

NOTE: If you have sponsored or performance ad content planned for your email, we'll replace the Ad Slot with that content instead of showing a programmatic ad there.

How to disable programmatic ads

If you change your mind about sending programmatic ads, you have two options for disabling them.

However, any programmatic ads in emails you've already sent will still be visible, and you'll be able to earn ad revenue from them.

Turn off programmatic ads

You can turn off programmatic ads without affecting the sending of performance ads or sponsored content, if you have these enabled.

Go to the Ads dashboard and click Settings at the top right.

Then, disable the Programmatic ads toggle in the Ads Settings window.

Finally, click Turn off in the window that pops up to confirm your choice.

Once you've done this, any Ad Slots you've added to your Broadcast or Sequence drafts will still remain in them. But your subscribers won't see any programmatic ads in these emails when they receive them. This is even if you subsequently re-enable programmatic ads after the emails have gone out.

Remove your Ad Slots

You can also remove your email drafts' Ad Slots. Doing this will prevent all ads (whether they're programmatic ads or performance ads) from appearing in your emails when they're sent.

Hover over your Ad Slot, and then click the trash can icon on the right to delete it.
