How to hold subscribers in evergreen Email Sequences

Now you can keep subscribers in an Email Sequence, even if all of its emails have already been sent.

If you plan to add more emails to your Email Sequence in the future, make the Email Sequence evergreen.

Let's say you've created an Email Sequence with five published emails. You want to add more emails to it, but you're not ready to write them yet.

If subscribers are added to that Email Sequence via a Visual Automation, they'll get marked as "Completed" for that Email Sequence once they receive its last published email.

This means they'll exit the Email Sequence and won't get any new emails you add to it in the future.

The good news is you can choose whether you want subscribers to exit the Email Sequence or stay in it after they've completed it. An Email Sequence set to keep its subscribers is called an evergreen Email Sequence.

Let's walk through how to set this up in your Kit account.

NOTE: Only creators on a paid plan can access this feature.

How to set up an evergreen Email Sequence

Go to Send > Email Sequences from the top navigation bar.

Then, choose an existing Email Sequence or create a new one.

Once you're in the Email Sequence editor, click Settings in the top right corner.

On the right side of the page (below Email Sequence Behavior), you'll see a section that says Should subscribers added via Visual Automations stay in the email sequence?

Use this section to choose whether your subscribers stay in the Email Sequence once they complete it.

☝️ Here's what these options mean:

  • Choosing No means that subscribers added to the Email Sequence via a Visual Automation won't receive any new emails you add to the Email Sequence in the future.

  • Choosing Yes means that subscribers added to the Email Sequence via a Visual Automation will stay active in the Email Sequence and receive any new emails you add to it later on.

Click the Update Email Sequence button in the bottom right corner to save your changes.

Once you have the evergreen Email Sequence set up, you can breathe easy knowing that you can add new Email Sequence emails whenever they're ready! 🎉

Frequently asked questions

Who will get new emails I add to the Email Sequence?

When a new email is added to an evergreen Email Sequence, it will be sent to all subscribers who are subscribed to the Email Sequence.

This includes the subscribers who received your previous emails before you added new ones.

What if I'm not using a Visual Automation?

If subscribers are added to an Email Sequence via a Rule or a Bulk Action, subscribers will automatically stay active in the Email Sequence. This is even if they have already received all of the Email Sequence's emails.

Why are my subscribers not moving to the next step in my Visual Automation?

If you have the evergreen Email Sequence option turned on, subscribers will not progress past the Email Sequence step to any subsequent steps present in your Visual Automation. This is because they are still active in the Email Sequence.

To get your subscribers to move forward, turn the evergreen option off.
