Sell digital products with Kit: overview and FAQs

What it costs to sell digital products with Kit, how to start selling, and answers to the most common questions.

You can sell digital products directly from your Kit account, without connecting a separate e-commerce platform. Commerce is available on every plan, including the free Newsletter plan.

What it costs

Selling in USD costs 3.5% + $0.30 per transaction. There's no monthly fee for Commerce and nothing to pay until you make a sale.

Fees vary slightly by currency because of exchange rates. For the full per-currency breakdown, see Sell your products in different currencies. As the seller, you're paid in your bank account's currency.

Start selling in three steps

  1. Set up payments to connect your Kit account to Stripe.

  2. Create a product and set its price, currency, and how it gets delivered.

  3. Share it by adding the product to a broadcast, form, or landing page, or by sending customers its link directly.

NOTE: Kit's existing e-commerce integrations still work exactly as they always have. There's no requirement to sell through Kit if you'd rather keep selling elsewhere.

FAQs

The basics

Which countries can I sell from?

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

What can I sell?

Anything you can deliver digitally: e-books, courses, templates, presets, music, or a paid newsletter. You can also sell access to a link, which covers things like a members-only page or a hosted course.

Can I keep using my existing e-commerce integrations?

Yes. Your integrations keep working, and you can run both alongside each other.

Fees and payouts

Are there any hidden fees?

No. The 3.5% + $0.30 per transaction is the only cost of selling through Kit, and it applies only when you make a sale.

Which currencies are supported?

USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, and NZD. Each product is priced in a single currency, and fees differ slightly per currency. See Sell your products in different currencies for the fee table and setup steps.

Do I need a Stripe account?

Yes. Stripe processes your payments, and you'll create a new Stripe account when you set up payments in Kit, even if you already have one.

NOTE: Stripe is the only payment platform Kit supports.

When do payouts happen?

Payouts go out weekly, on Fridays. Your first one takes longer because of processing, so expect it 7–14 days after your first successful sale.

Taxes

Can Kit collect taxes for me?

Kit collects Value-Added Tax (VAT) only. Other taxes, including US sales tax and Canada QST, aren't charged or collected for you.

Can Kit calculate VAT?

Yes. How to collect VAT on product and Tips purchases covers enabling VAT collection, setting product types and tax codes, what customers see at checkout, and downloading your VAT report.

Setting up your product

Can I charge on a subscription basis?

Yes. Our guide to creating a paid newsletter walks through it, and the same setup applies to other subscription products.

Can I offer discounts?

How do I sell access to a link instead of a file?

Choose the Go to URL fulfillment method when you set up your product. See the guide to creating a product for the steps.

Can I upsell customers who buy one of my products?

Yes. You can add up to two upsells to a product's checkout page. See Adding upsells to products.

Can I sell physical products?

Kit fulfills digital products only. You can still charge for something else, like a live workshop, but you'll handle fulfillment yourself.

Can I sell product bundles?

Not currently. As a workaround, create a single product that delivers multiple files or a link to a page holding everything in the bundle.

Which file types work for product images?

Static image files, such as JPG or PNG.

Can I remove the Built with Kit badge?

On a paid plan, yes. See The Built with Kit badge. On the free plan, the badge stays.

How do I test a product sale?

Two options:

  1. Buy it, then refund yourself. Complete the purchase as usual and issue a refund. Processing fees aren't refunded.

  2. Use a 100% discount. Create a discount code and buy your product for $0. You'll still enter a card, but you won't be charged.

How do I delete a product?

Two options:

  1. Unpublish it. This stops new purchases, but existing subscriptions keep billing. Open the product in the product editor, click Publish, then click Unpublish Product at the bottom right of the modal.

  2. Delete it. This removes the product and stops all subscription billing. From the Products page, click the three dots next to the product name > Delete.

Customers, receipts, and refunds

Which payment methods can customers use?

Credit card, plus other methods like Apple Pay and Google Pay where they're relevant to the customer. See Supported payment methods for digital products.

Will I be notified about purchases and cancellations?

Yes, once you turn on notifications for product purchases and subscription cancellations. See Account notifications and summary.

Can I change the receipt's Download button?

The button's color and text can't be changed. You can add your own messaging to the receipt email instead.

If you're not selling a file, the Download button won't appear on receipts at all, as long as no file is uploaded in your product's fulfillment settings.

If a customer forwards a receipt, will the download link still work?

Yes. The link works multiple times and for anyone who has it.

Can I resend a receipt if the customer's email address had a typo?

Yes. Open the subscriber's profile and click the Purchases tab to resend it.

Can I refund a purchase?

Yes, in full. See How to refund a purchase.

What do "incomplete" and "expired" mean?

The purchase didn't go through and the customer wasn't charged. Ask them to try again.
