How to set up Tips in Kit

Receive tips without paying high commissions.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Collect tips from your fans

Kit's Tips feature lets you accept tips from fans who love your work. These tips can be in preset amounts of $5, $10, $20, or $50, or a custom amount of their choice (of at least $1).

While many creator platforms offer similar tipping features, they often charge a high commission—possibly as high as 30% per tip.

Our Tips commission fees are only 3.5% + $0.30 per tip, which is inclusive of credit card processing fees. This way, you get to keep the bulk of the tip for yourself.

Not only that: people who tip you will be added to your email list, so you can build and nurture your audience on your own terms.

Tips is available to all Kit users (even if you’re on our free plan). Let’s go through how to set it up.

How to set up Tips

1. Set up payments

Click the Earn tab in the navigation, followed by Tips. You’ll see this screen:

You’ll need to have set up payments for your Kit account before you can use Tips. If you haven't done this, click the Set up payments button, and then follow the steps here.

2. Create a new Tip

Once you've set up payments, click either Set up Tips or the + Add new Tip buttons to set up your first Tip.

First, give your Tip a name and select the currency you want to receive tips in. Then, click Next.

After that, customize your Tip's custom domain and page URL. The page URL is the URL people can use to access your Tip's page.

Hit the Set up Tips button and voilà, your Tip has been created!

3. Customize your Tip

After that, you’ll be redirected to the Tips builder. Now, you'll customize the look of your:

  • Tip page

  • Checkout page

  • Confirmation page

  • Receipt email

The procedure for customizing these is similar to customizing any other product you sell through Kit. Check out our detailed guide on this procedure here.

As you customize your Tip's pages, click the Save button at the top right of the Tips builder to save your work.

To change your Tip's name, custom domain, or domain URL, click the Settings toolbar option at the top right of the Tips builder.

4. Publish your Tip

When you’re happy with your Tip, click the Publish button at the top right of the Tips builder.

You’ll be able to grab either a unique share link or a button embed code for your Tip to start promoting it to the world.

Repeat steps two through four above to create as many Tips as you need.

Where to ask for tips

Here are some suggestions:

  • Display a Tip button on your website or blog. You could put it in your website header or footer, where it’s accessible to all readers.

  • Link to your Tip in your newsletter footer. Add your Tip to your email template to avoid the hassle of manually embedding your Tip into every new email.

  • Add your Tip to your link page. If you have a webpage with a list of links to your website and socials, like your Creator Profile, you can link to your Tip there too!

  • Share your Tip in an email sequence. Link to your Tip in email sequences you send to subscribers via Visual Automations, to publicize your Tip to subscribers on autopilot.

Tips reporting

Get reports on your Tip's transactions by going to the Tips page and clicking your Tip.

Click the Purchases toolbar option at the top right of the Tips builder to view:

  • Your tippers' first name (if available) and email address

  • The date the tipper joined your email list

  • The tipper's subscriber status

The default view is "Confirmed Subscribers," which shows tippers who are current subscribers to your email list.

Click the "Confirmed Subscribers" dropdown option to view tippers with other subscriber statuses. For example, selecting "Cancelled Subscribers" will display tippers who have cancelled their subscription to your email list.

You can also use the checkbox next to each tipper to run bulk actions with them.

On the other hand, click the Reports toolbar option at the top right of the Tips builder to view your Tip's transaction history. You can view:

  • Each tipper's name

  • The tipper's subscriber status

  • The date you received the tip

  • The gross tip amount

  • The net tip amount after our commission of 3.5% + $0.30 per tip

Click the Export button to export your Tip's transaction history as a CSV file.

Unpublish your Tip

Want to stop receiving tips? You can unpublish your Tip.

Go to the Tips page and click your Tip, followed by the Publish button.

There, you’ll see a button called Unpublish Tip.

Click that button, followed by Yes, to prevent others from tipping you via this particular Tip. (If you have other Tips set up, they will continue to be active as usual.)

When you’re ready to receive tips again, simply click the Publish button to reactivate your Tip.
