Landing Pages 2.0: How to use a custom domain

If you want your Landing Page to use your own custom domain rather than ours, here's how to get set up!

Your page, your domain.

By default, any Landing Page you create in Kit will be hosted on your kit.com domain. But you can have your Landing Pages use a custom domain (e.g., wondersite.com) instead.

In this article, you'll learn how to set up a Landing Page with a custom domain and things to note when doing this.

NOTE: For a higher-level overview of your domain options and which might be right for you, check out our overview of account domains versus custom domains.

Things to note

Before we get into the technical setup, let's cover a couple of important points to be aware of:

1. Setting up a custom domain won't break any previous links

Setting up a custom domain will not break or invalidate your default kit.com domain. You can still visit your Landing Page from its kit.com URL.

The same applies if you change your kit.com domain's prefix, like changing wondersite.kit.com to amazingsite.kit.com. The original prefix will still work.

2. Use a subdomain for your Landing Pages if you already have a website on your main domain

For example, if your existing website lives on your main domain wondersite.com, then set up your Landing Pages on a subdomain, like pages.wondersite.com, instead.

This is because if you set up your Kit Landing Page to use your main domain, users who go to your main domain will see your Landing Page instead of your website. (Unless this is what you intend for users to see.)

NOTE: Don't worry if you accidentally set up your Landing Pages to use your main domain instead of a subdomain—this is reversible.

Just remove the DNS records you added to your main domain, and everything should go back to normal once the changes take effect.

Refer to your hosting provider's documentation to learn how to set up a subdomain with them. They'll be the best resource for this, as each provider may have a different process.

Once you've created your subdomain, return to this article for the next steps.

How to set up your Landing Page to use a custom domain

To set up your Landing Page to use a custom (sub)domain, you'll add your custom (sub)domain to Kit if you haven't already, and then select it from your Landing Page's settings.

Here's how:

1. Add your (sub)domain to Kit

After entering your custom (sub)domain into the Add Custom Domain window, click the Homepage dropdown menu and select the Landing Page you want your users to land on if they visit that (sub)domain directly.

For example, if you set up your Landing Page as the homepage of your wondersite.com custom domain, users will see that page when they visit wondersite.com.

NOTE: You'll still be able to customize each Landing Page's path, like wondersite.com/my-landing-page. With this step, you're just selecting where people should land if they visit wondersite.com directly (and you can change this anytime).

After setting up your custom (sub)domain, you'll need to wait for its DNS records to be verified. Verification may take up to 24 to 48 hours.

If you're having trouble getting your custom (sub)domain verified, check out our custom domain troubleshooting guide.

2. Set your Landing Page paths

Once your (sub)domain is verified, you can set individual paths for your Landing Pages.

Your Landing Page's path is the my-landing-page portion of wondersite.com/my-landing-page (or subdomain.wondersite.com/my-landing-page if you're using a subdomain). Basically, it's your Landing Page's individual link.

To set up your Landing Page's path, go to Landing Pages & Forms under the Grow tab in the navigation. Open your Landing Page in the builder, and then click the gear icon at the top right:

Click Domain name from the left of the Landing page settings window:

Select your custom (sub)domain from the Custom Domain dropdown, and then enter your desired path in the Page URL field.

Click Add to add the path. Then, click Save to save your changes.

Finally, visit your Landing Page's custom (sub)domain URL to check if you're directed to your Landing Page.
